Time Line

1903 - was born in India, 25 June

1911 - St. Cyprian's School in Eastbourne

1921 - joined the British police in Burma

1928 - journeyed to Paris

1932-33 - worked as a teacher in small private school

1933 - first book was published 'Down and Out' in Paris and London

1934 - a part time job in a second hand bookshop

1934 - first novel was published 'Burmese Days'

1936 - married Eileen

1936 - was commissioned to write a book about poverty in nothern England

1936 - volunteer for Spanish Civil War

1938 - was suffering from tuberculosis

1939 - was rejected for military service

1941-45 - worked for the BBC

1943 - literary editor, Tribune left wing magazine

1945- was published 'Animal Farm'

         - Eillen,first wife, died

1949 - was published '1984'

         - married second wife Sonia

1950 - died, 21 January
